Tonya's Story

About 7 years ago, Tonya made the brave decision to leave a domestic violence situation for the sake of her and her daughter. Leaving the situation was a courageous choice, but Tonya went a step further and left her home and community for her and her daughter’s safety.

Tonya and her daughter were able to find refuge and hope through Butler County United Way’s Emergency Shelter to Eliminate Homelessness, a collaboration led by Hope House Rescue Mission, Modern Psychiatry and Wellness, and JobsPlus. The help Tonya and her daughter received gave them enough strength to keep from going back to their abuser. Over time, with the help of job training, counseling, coaching, and shelter, Tonya was able to get a job and move into her own apartment. Tonya is now working full time, has her own home, and her daughter is set to graduate high school soon.

Thanks to collaborations like Emergency Shelter to Eliminate Homelessness, people like Tonya and her daughter can find support when it matters most. In the last year, nearly 8,000 people in Butler County have been provided emergency housing or assistance.
